Christmas Lights Art Competition a Great Success

Nov 30, 2017

The Christmas lIghts Switch on in Letterkenny was a huge success attracting large crowds to the Main Street.
Lots of businesses along the Main Street offered complimentary refreshments so from McGettigin’s Hotel to The Courtyard Shopping Centre there was a fabulous festive atmosphere for all the family.

This year once again Letterkenny Chamber ran a Christmas in Letterkenny Art Competition for the local National Schools and once again they didn’t disappoint. The judges had a hard decision sifting through the fantastic pictures of Letterkenny at Christmas.

There were 5 prize winners including a special commendation for Leah Sullivan of Woodlands National School who painted a picture of The Mayor, Jimmy Kavanagh switching on the lights.

The winners were as follows:
Overall Winner: John Kealy, Woodlands National School 5th Class

Highly Commended: Cara, Educate Together, 2nd Class

Ellie O’Donnell, Scoile Mhuire Gan Smal, 6th Class

Ava Sweeney, Glenswilly National School, 4th Class

John was delighted with his prize of turning on the lights alongside the Mayor of Letterkenny MD, Jimmy Kavanagh.

Before the main event the crowds were entertained by Keith Fletcher dressed in a very seasonal suit who kept us all singing Christmas tunes.  SM Dance & Fitness (Pinehill Studios)  provided amazing dance routines even in the cold weather.  The lights were switched on to reveal the new market Square lights canopy to cheers from the audience.

Santa arrived a few minutes later in a vintage vehicle courtesy of Tinney Agri Spares with a Garda escort. Greeting all the children he and his helpers distributed treats for all.The switch on marks the start of a busy shopping season and Letterkenny Chamber wishes all its members and customers a Happy Christmas.
